Scholarships at UP College of Law

The College of Law has several scholarships supported by donations from alumni and friends. These are administered, in cooperation with their respective donors, by the Dean and the Scholarship Committee of the College.

Chief Justice Fred Ruiz Castro Scholarship established by the members of UP Law Class of 1936 through the Chief Justice Fred Ruiz Castro Educational Foundation, Inc. to honor the memory of the late Chief Justice Castro, UP Law Class of 1936.
Cecilia Muñoz Palma Scholarship established initially by Justice Cecilia Muñoz Palma and continued by Cong. Nanette Castelo Daza for the support of one (1) female law student who is in financial need and a resident of Quezon City.

Owen White Scholarship established by Mr. Owen White of Australia for the support of three (3) law students.

Teresita Cruz Sison and Maria Teresita Sison Go Scholarship established by Atty. Teresita C. Sison and Atty. Maria Teresita Sison Go for the support of a deserving female student.

Elpidio Quirino Foundation, Inc. Scholarship established by the Elpidio Quirino Foundation, Inc. to honor the memory of the late President Elpidio Quirino.

Vicente Santiago y del Rosario Scholarship established by the family of Vicente Santiago y del Rosario for the support of one (1) law student.

Malcolm II Trust Fund Scholarship established by the Malcolm Trust Fund for the support of six (6) scholars.

UP Class of 1941 Scholarship established by the UP Law Class of 1941 for the support of one (1) scholar.

Justice Alejo Labrador Memorial Scholarship established by the family of the late Justice Alejo Labrador in honor of his memory.

Justice Vicente Abad Santos Scholarship established by the family of the late Justice Vicente Abad Santos in honor of his memory.

Justice Natividad Almeda Lopez Memorial Scholarship established by the family of the late Justice Natividad Almeda Lopez in honor of her memory.

UP Law Class of 1971 Foundation, Inc. Scholarship established by the UP Law Class of 1971 for the support of two (2) scholars.

Justice Irene R. Cortes Memorial Scholarship established by the family of the late Justice Irene R. Cortes in honor of her memory.

Violeta Calvo-Drilon Memorial Scholarship established by Senator Franklin M. Drilon of UP Law Class of 1969 to honor the memory of his wife, Violeta Calvo-Drilon.

Juliana R. Ricalde Scholarship established by the UP Law Class of 2000 and Atty. Pelagio Ricalde in honor of her memory.

Prof. Esteban B. Bautista Scholarship established by Atty. Helen Tiu in honor of Prof. Esteban B. Bautista for the support of one (1) law student.

Intellectual Property Association of the Philippines Scholarship established by the Intellectual Property Association of the Philippines for the support of two (2) law students.

Violeta Calvo Drilon — ACCRA Law Scholarship established for the support of five (5) law regular student — a first year, a second year, a third year, a fourth year, and an evening student. Merit awards are granted every year to the following: 1) For Leadership - the President of the Law Student Government; 2) For Legal Writing - the Chairman of the Philippine Law Journal; 3) For Scholastic Excellence as Highest Freshman, Highest Sophomore and Highest Junior Scholars.

Catalino C. Macaraig, Jr. Scholarship established by the Family of the late Atty. Catalino C. Macaraig, Jr. for the support of a law student, preferably one who is employed in the executive or judicial branches or UP

Romeo Lim Go Scholarship established by Commissioner Romeo Lim Go for the support of one (1) male law student.

Benjamin V. Abela, Sr. Scholarship established by Mrs. Lourdes M. Abela for the support of one (1) law student.

CVC Law Scholarship established by Villaraza & Angangco Law Office in commemoration of the firm’s 25th foundation anniversary for the support of two (2) law students.

UP Law Class 1977 Scholarship established for the support of (2) law students. One for an active AFP member or the son or daughter of an active or retired AFP member, and one (1) for a civilian law student.

Law Offices of Edelberg and Espina Scholarship established for the support of one (1) law student, preferably capampangan speaking or of capampangan descent.

Doy Laurel Scholarship established by Mrs. Celia Diaz-Laurel in honor of former Vice President Salvador H. Laurel for the support of one (1) law student.
Justice Jose C. Campos, Jr. Scholarship established by Prof. Maria Clara L. Campos for the support of one (1) law student.

Portia Sorority Scholarship established by Atty. Mia G. Gentugaya for the support of one (1) law student, preferably a member of Portia Sorority. If there is no qualified applicant Portian, the next preference is a female student.
Awards and Prizes

In keeping faith with tradition, the College provides students with the encouragement and opportunity to do independent legal writing based on original research, and to produce essays that seek to make significant contributions to scholarship. Annually, the College awards prizes to deserving students in recognition of their excellence in legal writing. The Roberto Sabido Memorial Prize for Best Legal Research Paper Award was established by UP Law Alumni Foundation to recognize law students who produce excellent legal research worthy of publication in the Philippine Law Journal. The UP Law Class of 1974 Prizes consist of fourteen (14) awards established in honor of College of Law professors recognized as authorities in their respective fields of teaching. These are the Justice Irene R. Cortes Prize in Constitutional Law, Araceli T. Baviera Prize in Civil Law, Flerida Ruth P. Romero Prize in Family Law, Maria Clara Lopez Campos Prize in Commercial Law, Bienvenido C. Ambion Prize in Private International Law, Generoso V. Jacinto Prize in Remedial Law, Vicente V. Mendoza Prize for best review of Supreme Court Decisions, Jose C. Campos, Jr. Prize in Corporate Governance, Gonzalo T. Santos, Jr. Prize in Securities Law, Perfecto V. Fernandez Prize in Labor Law, Bartolome S. Carale Prize in Criminal Law, Magno S. Gatmaitan Prize in Professional Responsibility, HealthJustice Prize in Legal paper in Public Health, Salvador T. Carlota Prize in Administrative Law and the Law on Public Officers, and Carmelo V. Sison Prize in Torts and Damages. Likewise, in memory of the well-loved Professor Juliana R. Ricalde, the Juliana R. Ricalde Award for Best Paper in Taxation was established by her family in 2001. Atty. Helen Go Tiu of the UP Law Class of 1987 established the Esteban B. Bautista Prize for Best Paper in Intellectual Property Law. 

 
All these awards and prizes include monetary rewards to the recipients.
